Description
The American bison [Bison bison] also known as the American buffalo nearly became extinct in the 19th century due to commercial hunting and slaughter. They appear somewhat docile but are known for their "bad temper" and can jump 6' vertically and run 35-40 mph.
We frequently found them throughout Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park... and occasionally found a number of them on the roads.
This one was photographed close to Gros Venture Road near a warm spring fed creek. We learned from a video that many buffalo chose to migrate as winter approaches but some stay in the area... especially near the hot springs that are abundant in the area, but the grasses in these areas have large amounts of silica which wear down their teeth and eventually may cause starvation.
