Description
The historical area around the Colosseum in Rome Italy (seen off to the right) includes also the Arch of Constantine (front and center) and the Palatikne Hill (out of the photo to the left). The Arch of Constantine was erected by the Roman Senate to commemorate Constantine I's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge on October 28, 312 which finally brought some peace to the Roman Empire after years of civil war. Constantine believed that his improbable victory over Maxentius was the result of the help of the Christian god. As a result, during Constantine's reign persecution of Christians ended and Christianity became the official religion in the Roman Empire. Dedicated in 315, it is the last of existing triumphal arches in Rome, and the only one to make extensive use of spolia, re-using several major reliefs from 2nd century imperial monuments. The arch spans the Via Triumphalis, the way taken by the emperors when they entered the city in triumph. It is 85 feet wide, and 69 feet high.
